Ictalurus punctatus
A massive, fast-growing North American catfish suited strictly for indoor monster tanks or outdoor ponds. As opportunistic predators, they possess cavernous mouths and will consume any tank mate that fits inside. Known for being exceptionally hardy and tolerating a vast range of temperatures.
Pangasius sanitwongsei
An apex predator native to the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins. This true 'monster fish' is completely unsuitable for home aquariums. They grow to massive proportions, are highly active, and easily startled—often severely injuring themselves by crashing into tank walls. They possess a massive appetite and are highly piscivorous, consuming any tank mate that fits in their mouth.
Oliotius oligolepis
The Checker Barb is a peaceful, active shoaling fish native to Indonesia. Recognized by the striking checkerboard pattern of black spots on their metallic scales, they are excellent for planted community aquariums. Unlike some of their larger barb cousins, they are completely peaceful and not fin-nippers. They thrive in slightly cooler tropical water (20-25°C).
Dicrossus filamentosus
A striking, slender South American dwarf cichlid known for its distinct black checkerboard pattern along its flanks. Unlike many cichlids, they are exceptionally peaceful community fish. They are strict blackwater species, requiring very soft, acidic water, sand substrate, and leaf litter to thrive.
Melanotaenia splendida inornata
An active, schooling rainbowfish native to the river systems of northern Australia. Named for the subtle iridescent, checkered pattern on their scales. They are highly energetic mid-water swimmers that require open horizontal swimming space combined with densely planted areas for security.
Puntius titteya
A peaceful, schooling cyprinid endemic to the shaded streams of Sri Lanka. Unlike many of its barb cousins, the Cherry Barb is not a fin-nipper and makes an excellent community fish. They thrive in heavily planted aquariums with subdued lighting and leaf litter. Males display a striking cherry-red color, especially during spawning.
Neocaridina davidi
One of the most popular and hardy freshwater invertebrates in the hobby. They come in a rainbow of selectively bred colors. They are excellent scavengers and algae eaters, perfect for nano planted tanks. They are completely peaceful and have a negligible bioload, though they are highly vulnerable to predation by almost any fish with a mouth large enough to eat them.
Rasbora rubrodorsalis
A peaceful and active nano cyprinid native to the slow-moving, heavily vegetated waters of the Mekong basin in Southeast Asia. It is characterized by a distinctive bright red spot on its dorsal fin and a dark lateral line. They are a somewhat shy but excellent shoaling species that thrives in blackwater or heavily planted setups.
Boraras brigittae
A striking, deeply red nano fish native to the blackwater streams and peat swamps of southern Borneo. They are extremely peaceful and require a mature, densely planted aquarium with soft, acidic water. Due to their tiny size, they are completely safe with adult dwarf shrimp and are ideal for nano setups.
Gyrinocheilus aymonieri
Sold widely as a small, peaceful algae-eating juvenile, the Chinese Algae Eater (CAE) undergoes a drastic behavioral and dietary shift as it matures. Growing up to 25cm (10 inches), adults stop eating algae, become highly territorial, and are notorious for attacking slow-moving, flat-sided fish (like Angelfish, Discus, and Goldfish) to feed on their nutrient-rich slime coat. Best kept in fast-flowing river setups with robust, fast-moving tank mates.
Puntius semifasciolatus
A hardy, active, and peaceful schooling cyprinid originally from the Red River basin in Asia. While the wild form is a metallic green/silver, a highly popular selectively bred yellow morph (the 'Gold Barb') dominates the aquarium trade. They are distinctly subtropical and thrive in unheated or cooler water setups.
Melanochromis chipokae
A highly aggressive, torpedo-shaped Mbuna cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi. Known for intense sexual dimorphism, this species is extremely territorial. They require a rock-heavy setup to provide caves and break sightlines, along with hard, alkaline water. They graze on algae (Aufwuchs) and require a low-protein diet to prevent Malawi bloat.
Labidochromis chisumulae
An endemic Mbuna from Chisumulu Island in Lake Malawi. It is considered one of the 'dwarf' and relatively peaceful Mbuna species, closely related to the popular Yellow Lab. They are rock-dwellers that require hard, alkaline water, plenty of rock caves, and a sandy substrate for digging.
Hypselecara temporalis
A large, deep-bodied South American cichlid famous for its 'gentle giant' temperament. They undergo significant color changes as they mature, eventually displaying rich chocolate browns, greens, and vibrant reds. Though peaceful for their size, they are still cichlids and will consume any fish small enough to fit in their mouths.
Sphaerichthys osphromenoides
A delicate, highly specialized labyrinth fish native to the peat swamp forests of Southeast Asia. Known for its rich chocolate-brown coloration and vertical cream bands. It is notorious for being sensitive to water quality fluctuations and requires extremely soft, acidic 'blackwater' to thrive and resist bacterial infections. Best kept in a heavily planted, mature species-only setup or with very peaceful, small nano fish.
Loricaria cataphracta
A fascinating, peaceful, and slender whiptail catfish from South America. They feature a heavily armored, flattened body and an under-slung sucker mouth. In the aquarium, they are largely nocturnal and enjoy partially burying themselves in fine sand. Unlike strict algae-eating plecos, they are omnivores leaning towards carnivore, requiring meaty foods like frozen bloodworms and sinking carnivore pellets.
Xystichromis phytophagus
A critically endangered African cichlid (extinct in Lake Victoria, now found primarily in Lake Kanyaboli) famous for the male's festive red, green, and blue colors. Like many Victorian haplochromines, they are active, aggressive, and best kept in rock-scaped tanks with hard, alkaline water. They are harem breeders and require a strict male-to-female ratio to manage aggression.
Chuco godmanni
The Chuco Cichlid (formerly Vieja godmanni or Theraps godmanni) is a large, deep-bodied Central American cichlid native to the fast-flowing mountain rivers of Guatemala. They are highly territorial, robust, and known to redecorate their tanks by digging and uprooting plants. Due to their riverine origins, they require exceptionally high oxygen levels, vigorous water flow, and pristine water conditions. They specialize in eating fresh vegetation in the wild but are voracious omnivores in captivity.
Leptobarbus hoevenii
A massive, incredibly active schooling fish native to Southeast Asian rivers. Despite the 'shark' moniker, it is a giant cyprinid (carp). It grows exceptionally large and fast, requiring massive aquariums or heated ponds. Known as the 'Mad Barb' due to its erratic swimming and tendency to jump when startled. They are omnivorous and will eat anything that fits in their mouth, including smaller fish and plants.
Epiplatys annulatus
A striking nano killifish resembling a tiny rocket. Native to West African swamps, they have distinct black and yellow vertical bands. They are strictly surface dwellers (top-level) and are non-annual, meaning they live longer than annual killifish (2-3+ years). They are notorious jumpers and require a tight lid.
Chitala ornata
A massive, nocturnal predator native to Southeast Asia, widely known for the distinct row of ocellated spots above its anal fin. While sold as small silvery cute juveniles, they grow incredibly fast into nearly 1-meter giants that require immense aquariums. They are obligate carnivores and will eat any fish small enough to fit in their large mouths. They are shy during the day and require large hiding tubes or caves.
Chromobotia macracanthus
A highly popular but large-growing shoaling fish famous for eating nuisance snails. Known for their striking orange and black bands, they are highly social and must be kept in groups. They have no standard scales, making them sensitive to medications and prone to Ich, requiring pristine, warm water. They are known for their quirky behavior of sleeping on their sides or backs.
Panaqolus maccus
A popular, distinctly striped dwarf pleco native to Venezuela. It is a strictly wood-eating species (xylivore); real driftwood is mandatory for its survival and digestion. Because of this diet, it produces massive amounts of sawdust-like waste, requiring excellent mechanical filtration despite its small size. They are shy and predominantly nocturnal.

A striking and highly active Mbuna cichlid endemic to the rocky shores of Lake Malawi. Known for its brilliant, solid cobalt blue coloration (though white morphs exist). Like most Mbuna, they are highly territorial, rock-grazing herbivores. They require an alkaline environment, a sandy substrate for digging, and extensive rockwork to establish territories. To manage aggression, they are best kept either in heavily populated, mixed all-male Mbuna tanks or in species harems (1 male to 3+ females).
