Macrobrachium sp.

Invertebrates
Reviewed by Guidarium Editorial DeskUpdated May 11, 2026

Often accidentally sold as the peaceful Ghost Shrimp, the Whisker Shrimp is a larger, highly aggressive freshwater prawn. They can be easily identified by their unusually long antennae ('whiskers') and prominent, elongated front claws. They are opportunistic hunters that will actively prey on dwarf shrimp, fry, and even small sleeping community fish.

Whisker Shrimp Varieties

Each variety inherits the species defaults above. Only differences are highlighted.

Standard

The typical form encountered in the aquarium trade. Due to their predatory nature, they are best kept in a species-only tank or with fast, robust fish that occupy the upper water column. Do not mix with slow-moving fish or long-finned species.

Whisker Shrimp Care Guide Summary

The Whisker Shrimp, scientifically known as Macrobrachium sp., belongs to the Invertebrates family group. Adults reach a maximum size of approximately 7.5 cm and have a compressed body shape with a fast growth rate. Classified as aggressive, this species primarily occupies the bottom and mid-level zones of the aquarium and produces a low level of biological waste.

To thrive, the Whisker Shrimp requires a freshwater only aquarium with a minimum volume of 38 litres and a tank length of at least 45 cm. Water temperature should be maintained between 20°C and 28°C, with a pH range of 78 and a general hardness of 515 dGH. A moderate water flow is preferred.

Due to its specialist needs, the Whisker Shrimp is best suited for fishkeepers who can provide a carefully planned setup. The Whisker Shrimp is typically available in one standard form.

Whisker Shrimp Habitat Setup

When setting up an aquarium for the Whisker Shrimp, a moderate water flow best suits their natural preferences. Because this species occupies the bottom and mid-level zones, the aquarium layout should prioritise open swimming space in the centre of the tank for free movement and sufficient floor space with hiding spots among rocks, wood, or dense planting. Useful additions include dense planting to provide cover, break sightlines, and reduce stress.

Whisker Shrimp Compatibility Notes

Classified as aggressive, the Whisker Shrimp is adaptable and can be kept singly or in a small group, offering flexibility when planning a community tank. When choosing tankmates, avoid housing with slow-moving or long-finned species that may become targets for fin nipping and ornamental shrimp are not safe companions. Selecting tankmates that favour different water layers from the bottom and mid-level zones can help reduce competition and territorial overlap.

Who Whisker Shrimp Is Actually For

Whisker Shrimp is best for a fishkeeper who expects a species with attitude and plans the tank around that behavior and can provide someone who understands its individual space requirements. It makes the most sense for a hobbyist who will actually build around its needs, especially plants.

The most common mistake is buying Whisker Shrimp for looks first and only later discovering how its adult size, behavior, or bioload changes the whole tank plan. Another frequent problem is forcing it into an over-busy community when it would do better with more room or more deliberate tankmate choices.

Whisker Shrimp Feeding & Diet Considerations

The Whisker Shrimp will hunt and eat ornamental shrimp, making it unsuitable for shrimp-focused setups, will eat fry, so breeding efforts in the same tank are unlikely to succeed, and is primarily active at dusk and dawn, so offering food shortly after lights-off ensures it receives adequate nutrition.

Frequently Asked Questions About Whisker Shrimp

How big does Whisker Shrimp get?

Whisker Shrimp (Macrobrachium sp.) typically reaches a maximum adult size of approximately 7.5 cm. They have a compressed body shape and a fast growth rate.

What tank size does Whisker Shrimp need?

A minimum aquarium volume of 38 litres and a tank length of at least 45 cm are recommended for Whisker Shrimp. This ensures enough swimming space and helps maintain stable water conditions.

What water parameters does Whisker Shrimp need?

Whisker Shrimp thrives in freshwater only conditions with a temperature range of 20–28°C, a pH between 7 and 8, and a general hardness of 5–15 dGH. A moderate water flow is preferred.

Is Whisker Shrimp peaceful or aggressive?

Whisker Shrimp is classified as aggressive with an aggression score of 7 out of 10. Careful tankmate selection is essential to avoid conflict.

Can Whisker Shrimp live alone?

Yes, Whisker Shrimp can be kept singly or in a group. They are flexible and adapt well to both setups.

Is Whisker Shrimp safe with shrimp?

No. Whisker Shrimp is known to eat ornamental shrimp and is not recommended for shrimp tanks. Even larger shrimp species like Amano Shrimp may be at risk.

Does Whisker Shrimp have any special tank requirements?

Yes. Whisker Shrimp benefits from plants - densely covered in the aquarium. These features help replicate their natural habitat and promote overall health and well-being.

Fish Similar to Whisker Shrimp

Ghost Shrimp

Palaemonetes paludosus

Invertebrates
4 cm Peaceful

A completely transparent freshwater shrimp native to the southeastern United States. While frequently sold as inexpensive feeder animals, they make fascinating, active scavengers for nano and peaceful community tanks. They tirelessly consume uneaten food and detritus but have a relatively short lifespan of 1 to 2 years.

Cherry Shrimp

Neocaridina davidi

Invertebrates
3 cm Peaceful

One of the most popular and hardy freshwater invertebrates in the hobby. They come in a rainbow of selectively bred colors. They are excellent scavengers and algae eaters, perfect for nano planted tanks. They are completely peaceful and have a negligible bioload, though they are highly vulnerable to predation by almost any fish with a mouth large enough to eat them.

Red Swamp Crayfish

Procambarus clarkii

Invertebrates
12 cm Highly Aggressive

A highly active, hardy, and notoriously aggressive freshwater crustacean. Procambarus clarkii are opportunistic omnivores and apex bottom-dwellers in most aquariums. They are incredibly destructive to live plants, will rearrange substrate, and eagerly hunt bottom-sleeping fish, snails, and shrimp. They require a secure, tight-fitting lid as they are expert escape artists.

Blue Pearl Shrimp

Neocaridina zhangjiajiensis

Invertebrates
3 cm Peaceful

A hardy, peaceful dwarf shrimp species closely related to the popular Cherry Shrimp. They are excellent scavengers that constantly graze on biofilm and algae. Due to their tiny size, they are extremely vulnerable to predation and are best kept in dedicated invertebrate setups or with very small, peaceful nano fish (like rasboras).

Vampire Shrimp

Atya gabonensis

Invertebrates
15 cm Peaceful

Despite its intimidating name, the Vampire Shrimp is a gentle giant. It is a strictly peaceful freshwater invertebrate that uses specialized fan-like appendages to filter microscopic food from the water column. They require heavily oxygenated water with strong currents, mature tanks (to ensure suspended particulate matter), and places to hide.

American Grass Shrimp

Palaemonetes kadiakensis

Invertebrates
4.5 cm Peaceful

A completely freshwater shrimp native to North America. Often sold interchangeably with Ghost Shrimp (P. paludosus), the American Grass Shrimp is hardier, breeds more easily in entirely freshwater, and is an excellent, active scavenger for community tanks. They have a completely transparent body and prefer planted aquariums.
