Can African Butterfly Fish and Lemon Tetra Live Together?

African Butterfly Fish is a moderately assertive species (5/10), while Lemon Tetra is peaceful (1/10). This notable difference means African Butterfly Fish may occasionally assert dominance over Lemon Tetra.

In terms of spatial distribution, African Butterfly Fish prefers the Top (Surface) zone, whereas Lemon Tetra occupies the Middle (Open Water) zone. Because they use different levels of the water column, territorial disputes are less likely and the tank will appear more balanced.

Worth noting: African Butterfly Fish is nocturnal and will be most active after lights-out, naturally reducing daytime encounters. Also, African Butterfly Fish is a known jumper, so a tight-fitting lid is essential.

Because this pairing requires extra vigilance, include plenty of hiding spots — caves, driftwood, and dense plant clusters — so the less dominant fish can retreat when needed.
