Can Gold Nugget Pleco (L018) and Neon Tetra Live Together?

Gold Nugget Pleco (L018) is a moderately assertive species (6/10), while Neon Tetra is peaceful (1/10). This notable difference means Gold Nugget Pleco (L018) may occasionally assert dominance over Neon Tetra.

In terms of spatial distribution, Gold Nugget Pleco (L018) prefers the Bottom (Substrate) zone, whereas Neon Tetra occupies the Middle (Open Water) zone. Because they use different levels of the water column, territorial disputes are less likely and the tank will appear more balanced.

Additional behavioural considerations to keep in mind: Hyperactive swimmers can stress shy, slow-moving species through constant motion.

There is no temperature overlap between Gold Nugget Pleco (L018) (27–32°C) and Neon Tetra (20–26°C). This fundamental mismatch makes long-term cohabitation impractical.

To house Gold Nugget Pleco (L018) and Neon Tetra together, plan for an aquarium of at least 300 litres with a minimum length of 120 cm. This accounts for the larger species' space requirements with an additional 20 % buffer to reduce territorial tension.

Providing a mix of open swimming space and sheltered areas with rocks, driftwood, or plants will keep both species comfortable and allow natural behaviour.
