Can Arfak Rainbowfish and Gold Nugget Pleco (L018) Live Together?

Arfak Rainbowfish is a peaceful species (2/10), while Gold Nugget Pleco (L018) is moderately assertive (6/10). This notable difference means Gold Nugget Pleco (L018) may occasionally assert dominance over Arfak Rainbowfish.

In terms of spatial distribution, Arfak Rainbowfish prefers the Middle (Open Water) and Top (Surface) zones, whereas Gold Nugget Pleco (L018) occupies the Bottom (Substrate) zone. Because they use different levels of the water column, territorial disputes are less likely and the tank will appear more balanced.

Add plenty of line-of-sight breaks using driftwood, rocks, and dense planting to reduce territorial confrontations. To house Arfak Rainbowfish and Gold Nugget Pleco (L018) together, plan for an aquarium of at least 250 litres with a minimum length of 120 cm. Because this pairing requires extra vigilance, include plenty of hiding spots — caves, driftwood, and dense plant clusters — so the less dominant fish can retreat when needed.
