Can Alligator Gar and Bristlenose Pleco Live Together?

Alligator Gar is a semi-aggressive species (7/10), while Bristlenose Pleco is peaceful (2/10). This notable difference means Alligator Gar may occasionally assert dominance over Bristlenose Pleco.

In terms of spatial distribution, Alligator Gar prefers the Top (Surface) and Middle (Open Water) zones, whereas Bristlenose Pleco occupies the Bottom (Substrate) zone. Because they use different levels of the water column, territorial disputes are less likely and the tank will appear more balanced.

Worth noting: Bristlenose Pleco is nocturnal and will be most active after lights-out, naturally reducing daytime encounters. Also, Alligator Gar is a known jumper, so a tight-fitting lid is essential.

To improve the chances of a peaceful coexistence in this community tank: A larger aquarium with ample hiding spots can help diffuse aggression and give the less dominant fish space to retreat.
